It's been awhile, so I will try as best I can to remember the speaker conversation. Pretty sure it went something like this.

"Honey, do you remember me talking about how since high school I've wanted to own a quality set of speakers? You know the kind I mean - blow the roof off your house speakers." Then he is getting a call and has to get off the phone.

Then I get the second phone call. "Johnny was at a yard sale when he saw these speakers. He actually drove off and left them there. I told him to go back as fast as he could and get them."

I remember having a fairly lengthy convo about said speakers, but I'm thinking you get the picture.

It's to hard to type inflection so you'll have to trust me when I tell you I recognized right away that I was being entreated. I do remember the punchline he said, "Did I mention that they are kind of big?"

Now I've widened my shot to include the speakers. Not only are they kinda big, they are kinda black, and sitting in the living room, that prior to their arrival didn't have a speck of black in the decor, at least not on purpose. So now I have a serious problem. These speakers are a force to be reckoned with. My first thought was making a big slip cover to camouflage them. Then I remembered the photos of the Emily Chalmers loft and her use of black as an anchor, or point of interest, in an otherwise white space. Viola. Decoration born of desperation my friends.

Oh by the way, he redeemed himself when he came home after the living room re-do and said,

"I like it, it's very Anthropologie."

Some time ago I saved this photo to my desktop. I could not believe there was actually a kindred spirit out there, one who like me, had such obvious love of skirts made of curtains. In fact, I made a very similar skirt to the one on top. I've actually made quite a few skirts from vintage drapery fabric. Time went by and I couldn't remember the source of the original image.

Then in December I happened to be visiting the decor8 blog and the images of a stylist named Emily Chalmers almost took my breath away. You know the feeling you get when you see a space and declare, "I could seriously live in that space." Everything about it... just lovely. So I got curious about you Emily Chalmers. I googled you. I tried to find every image that was out there. So there it is. The image I found so long ago and loved is your closet, in an open loft, in London. I love your loft.

Then I discovered not only are you a stylist, you are an author, and shop owner - with adorable personal style to boot.

So yep... I ordered your books, not all of them, there's a lot.

I've included the line drawing so that the side panel with side pocket application is visible. That sounds so professional (got it off the pattern back). I'm referring to the curved piece that hooks the front onto the back. The busy print on this fabric doesn't show off this design detail. If I make this one again I will make it in a solid, or at least a less busy print. I enjoyed making this and the unusual construction kept me entertained until the very end. I did not make this dress this fall (although it only recently has seen closet rotation). I have been lately referring to this dress as the suitcase dress.

I must be in a Fall frame of mind - I brought home a vintage dress in these same colors. Not on purpose. In fact did not even realize it until Jenny pointed it out. In fact she said, "Don't you already have a dress just like that?" To which I say, "Nope, this one has sleeves, and rhinestones."

Swirl Girl

In the forties the Neat 'N Tidy pinafore apron made by L. Nachman & Son Company became the "Ty-Wrap By Swirl" dress we know as Swirl. Most of the info I could find was in this article.

In all my thrifting/estate sale adventures I've yet to find an authentic Swirl dress. (sigh)

I have followed and even occasionally bid on an ebay auction. These dresses are collectible. The ending price always reflected this fact.

Swirl dresses are wrap-around dresses that tie and fasten with a button. The sleeves and bodice are most often in one piece (unusual to see set in sleeves).

The more I thought about these dresses the more I wanted one. So...

This is what I came up with. The fabric is a thrifted sheet, I didn't want to cut into my vintage fabric on the first one in case it was a bust.

Pretty happy with this one, although I am going to change a couple of things before I make another.

I was a bit lazy and changed the skirt, I didn't want to match plaid on each of the six gores.

Pattern description of the sleeves; short kimono sleeves cut in one with yoke. The pattern went together very smoothly. Don't you just love vintage patterns? Almost every time they work up with no issues.

The triangular opening at the neck edge with cutie fabric bow.

To get the right silhouette for the Dummy Did It Dress I morphed Simplicity 3774 bodice and out-of-print McCall's 4783 skirt.

The dress is completely interlined (yea for built in slips).

I'm working really hard on the re-fashion pile. I buy things that do not fit me (mostly vintage- since I rarely find vintage in my size). Which wouldn't be a problem; if it wasn't for the fact that I seriously hate to alter/mend. I've had garments sit for days and days waiting on a simple fix like buttons. I'm a seamstress that doesn't like to mend. In a last ditch effort; to attempt digging myself out from under this pile, I plan on two re-fashions for every one new project.

Yep, you heard it here first- 2 to 1.

The Look for Less

This is my Dolce & Gabbana inspired jacket. I found the vintage sweater while thrifting.

The roses are made using a wool knit remnant. I just stitched a bias tube and applied the rose using an embroidery stitch. If you are the visual type there is a great tutorial here from Hot Patterns.

I took the roses all the way around the jacket back.

If you noticed the plaid skirt peeking out, it is a vintage re-fashion and I'll post it later.

Fall Inspiration

I'm sure to the true fashionista this post is very late. These Dolce & Gabbana images are in the fashion magazines - and I'm sure, all over the web.
I have a hard time wrapping my head around fall fashion until it is actually Fall. So...
I am finding several looks from this collection inspiring. First, the little suit. I plan to wear mine with a top.
Last fall I wanted to make a Chanel- inspired jacket and didn't get to it. So I'm moving it up near the top of my sewing queue.

I had to include these images. When I saw them I was reminded of a dream I had in high school on more than one occasion, with slight variations in detail.
I am in the hallway going to class. My mood can be described as happy, buoyant even. I speak to all my friends as I pass, and things are just peachy, until I feel a slight breeze on my nearly bare derriere. That's right -I forgot to put on my pants. I look down and sure enough -I'm in my underwear. Predictably this is the point where my peers notice that I came to school in my panties. No one ever notices until I do, weird. The rest of the dream usually involves some elaborate plot to clothe myself before everyone notices.
Maybe the Dolce & Gabbana models won't look down, and will never have to know that they did the whole second half of the session in their skivvies.

Day two Self-Stitched

I am including this vintage dress in my Self-Stitched wardrobe. This was a pretty hefty re-do.
I cut off the weird almost 3/4 length sleeves, and with the fabric - lengthened the way short torso (bodice). At some point the dress had been altered and I had to fix the pleats. I almost gave up on this one. I hate mending/altering with a passion. I am not really sure why I loathe it so. It makes so much sense, as I love vintage, but rarely find anything I can wear - as is. So I've tackled a couple of items that were sitting in my mending pile, and plan to do a few more this month.

Note to my siblings: I did a little mending-it is not your green light to ask me to hem your pants. Remember, I am an artist. (I use this when I don't want to do something) ;)

I am happy with the fit and my fabric choice (100% cotton seersucker).
I made this one as is, with the exception of the addition of pockets in the side seams.
If you've been considering making this one up - check this out. The same view made up in a print fabric (sis boom). I like her version a lot.

Slow Stitched

Somewhere along the way I may have mentioned slow stitching. I read about "slow design", in the Alabama Stitch Book. Natalie Chanin refers to this approach as embracing the long-term view over the short-term gain by using age-old techniques to create products that celebrate strong design principles for modern living. The designs in this book are fashioned by hand. In other words hand stitched. I love the thought of this. Taking time to thoughtfully stitch something up- enjoying the slow measured pace.

Never again will I use the words slow and stitched in the same sentence. This dress took me about three weeks to complete. I could never find time to work on it. So I stitched it- a few minutes here and there.

Finding myself at the end of the day dress project, frustrated and in need of a sewing fix, I couldn't be bothered to hand stitch the Alabama project and I stitched it entirely on the machine, so there.

I found a pair of Keds classic white canvas tennis shoes at an estate sale this weekend - which I was looking for by the way. You know where this is going don't you. They needed a day dress to go with. Just sayin...
You think I have crafty attention deficient disorder? really?

I've had the fabric for a couple of years. It came from a box of fabric D found at an auction. It is similar in hand to feed-sack cloth.

My thought for the rick-rack trim was to add something a little more subtle this time. Maybe just add a little texture. Look closer, a little closer (you may have to click on the photo and make it larger) a little closer, there. What do you think? Maybe it's a little to subtle?
So do I go red or black and contrast?

2010 Edition

The bags are the same as the ones found here, and here, except for the addition of the 2010 pocket.

The bags are a collaboration with this artist. She designed and hand pulled the screen print. The print was made on recycled canvas fabric, that at one time covered sofas. The handles are up-cycled from discarded handbags.

On the back of the bags we use vintage home dec fabric. They are all a little different, depending on the fabric I've found.

As for the home improvement project, I'm going to wait to share (wip).
It was necessary as my place was starting to look like the Shipman's. You know, the Shipman's.
Actually... I don't know them either. The family lived next door to my Nanny (grandmother) when she was growing up. The report is that their place was pretty trashy. In the years that followed, as a tool to enlist our help, she would refer to the now infamous Shipman's. As in, "This place is starting to look like the Shipman's"; which was a gross exaggeration on her part because; we did not dump trash in a pit dug in an unused room of our home, nor carelessly dump our no longer functioning bathroom fixtures into the yard and plant flowers in the bowl.
And so it goes... my sisters and I understand that to let yard maintenance go, is to surely end up like the Shipman's.

Simplicity 2410

A couple of fun things to do with vintage tablecloths. Serve cherry pie made in a cast iron skillet on top of them. Or...

cut up the stained ones and make a skirt.

This skirt is made using a modified version of Simplicity 2410. I lengthened and changed the shape of the gores. This is a fairly quick and straightforward sew.
I've seen several friends blog posts recently referring to piping. Here is my own little version.
Piping to match your project is so easy to make. When you make your own instead of relying on the ready made versions, you choose the fabric and you also get to choose the size of the cording.

Notice how I just used the word friend so casually? I am always amazed and inspired by this sharing community. There are so many talented people (and many I'm sure that I've never visited) doing the most amazing things. It means a lot that you've taken the time to come over and see what I'm up to. I enjoy your comments so much. In fact a couple of times I cracked up the whole day (you know who you are).

So my friends... a big virtual hug and I wish I could have you over for pie.

I have made several things inspired by the Alabama Stitch Book. When I looked back through my photos I only managed to come up with the circle wrap skirt and the western corset. I did not use the slow stitch method. On both of these occasions I stitched the applique by machine. I am a huge fan of stitching by hand. In fact I find myself gravitating toward a project that I can complete from the porch.
I feel a need to slow everything down just a bit, and breathe.

About pockets...

I put pockets in everything I make. In the past (for some insane reason) I sometimes skipped this step. Then you try to put your money/keys in your pocket and - oops no pocket. Then the only logical next step is to put it/them in your bra. Then you have to hand your 10 year old son the keys to open the car door. Apparently your lightning quick reflexes aren't what they used to be and he realizes where the keys just came from.
"I am so not touching those keys."
"You do realize that you were breastfed , right?"
Now he's claiming that he's scarred for life. I'm not sure if it's from the breastfeeding or handling the keys that had briefly hung out in my bra.

Lets see... day thirteen Me-Made-May. I'm going to try and catch up with all the other participants (it seems they are on day 17 - ooops). So this is the ensemble (I can never say that with a straight face) I wore on day 13.
I'm not sure it's necessary to show off this top, because if you have the pattern- it's on the envelope exactly like this. I was looking for a pattern to make a stripy top and when I saw this one already made up, perfection. I did not change a thing. The pattern is Simplicity 2593. A Cynthia Rowley pattern. I am going out on a limb here to highly recommend this pattern.

The skirt is Burda 8155. I made this skirt when I was searching for the perfect pencil skirt. Although I like this skirt, I actually found a pencil skirt pattern that I like even better.

This is the dress I did not wear today. Unless you count the million times I tried it on. Then I waded it up and jumped up and down on it. I didn't really jump on it, but I did hurl a couple of expletives in its general direction.
As I am breezing right through my Me-Made-May wardrobe , I thought that I would try to add to it. This dress has been hanging out in the back of my closet waiting for a refashion. I made sooo... many mistakes today. It should have been fairly simple.
I am walking away. Maybe tomorrow when I'm not so frustrated I'll work it out.

Blue Moon Farm

Miss Halle's classroom went on a field trip to Blue Moon Farm today. The farm had several stations set up that showed the process (soil, seed, water, light, etc.) that different plants go through, before they produce the vegetables that you recognize on your dinner table.

At one point during the day her teacher was telling me about Nature Deficit Disorder. Which if I understand it correctly - is a theory that children are experiencing behavioral problems associated with the lack of time outdoors. There is no connection with the earth: therefore no responsibility for environmental stewardship.
Scary.

On a much lighter note, I am still hanging in there for Me-Made-May. I made this apron skirt with a pocket large enough for egg collecting. The fact that I do not own one chicken,
just a technicality.

Mom was a refashonista before the label was even coined. Way back, before it was even trendy. She tells me that she made my dresses fit my sisters after I had outgrown them.
The gingham dress that I'm wearing was made from a vintage pattern. The pattern had several different collar options. You could change the collar and sleeve combo and come up with several different looks. Or you could add rick-rack monograms and completely shake things up. hmm... gingham/rick-rack I'm sensing a trend here.

You might even use drapery fabric and a white collar to totally change the look.

Everything I know I learned from you, apparently I'm just a chip off the old block.
Happy Mothers Day mom, you're still a trendsetter in my book.

The photo session was a real endurance test for my teen aged son, who was only going the distance because he needed a ride. After I got back from taking him to C's house, I loaded the photos. After all the outtakes- this is as good as it got.

For day 1 of the MMM challenge I pulled out this western day dress that I made up a couple of years ago.
This pattern is an early one, before pattern companies printed on the pattern tissue. I didn't check the date (online) and it is not printed on the pattern, but I'm sure that it is from the forties. I think the shoes from that era are divine.

Here's a close-up of the western yoke. The fabric is a reproduction. It is quilters weight cotton. Originally I thought to make this dress from actual feed cloth fabric. Then when I looked into it, I realized that if I was lucky enough to find enough feed sacks to match - I wouldn't have been able to afford the price. Feed sacks have become quite collectible. Quilters cotton has a similar hand and a little coarseness that I thought came as close as I was going to get. I have a little collection of feed sacks that I'll show you sometime.

Hello green.
I took this photo yesterday, and woke to three inches of snow on the ground this morning. Maybe I'm being a tad hasty with this herald to Spring.

We took a walk today (in our mud boots) and talked about celebrating earth day everyday. So...happy earth day today and everyday.

Thoughts of warmer weather have me dreaming of vintage inspired dresses. And aprons. And apron skirts with pockets that are large enough to hold chicken eggs.

The contributor is Kayte Terry. The tutorial has been around for a bit, but I was reminded of it when I ordered Applique Your Way which is her most current craft book. She is also responsible for Embellishing. I made a skirt inspired by one of the projects from this book. I'll share it in the next couple of days.

I can't believe how windy it is. I think this is the worst windy day ever.

Yeah, but this year it's worse. It's serious windy out there.

I finally put a storyboard together for the mini-wardrobe challenge.
The objective:
Create a 4-piece wardrobe in 4 weeks.
The garments must combine to make 4 distinct outfits.

All the fit issues are resolved (muslin) and the actual fabric cut out, except for the fourth garment.

Square Dancin'

As you know I have a Nubian goat. Actually; you don't know that, but let's for this conversation pretend that we've talked about her before. Remember when we were talking about spring and new beginnings and tiny new baby animals? One of us must have said something like, "Wow, wouldn't it be great if Tess got knocked up and had little ones this spring?" So then we looked around and found her a boyfriend. As love goes- one thing led to another and then the triplets came.

And before you go forming that mental picture, NO this outfit is not for the baby goats. While I don't mind the label eccentric goat owner, I'm not that eccentric.

It's just that; what do you get the owner of said boyfriend to express your appreciation and gratitude for walking you through this incredible process?
Well... as it turns out her daughter also had a little one (human). So I presented her with her first goatie square dancin' outfit. Because yes, although not a square dancer, I'm that eccentric.

Did you catch the little rumba pants? I just sewed some eyelet lace directly onto the onesie. If you want to see it nearly life sized just click for a closer look. :)

Thrifty Thursday

This is my little haul from the thrift store today. I love finding vintage sewing items. The bias trim is 100% cotton instead of the more modern polyester or poly-cotton blend. My most favorite of all - can you make out the bias trim with the ditsy print? score.
Of course (greedy girl that I am) I wish there was more of the gold brocade.

Can you see it as a pencil skirt? Something similar to this j crew number? A look for less?
I just don't think I can squeeze even a pencil skirt out of this. darn.

On a totally random note; I signed up for the pattern review mini-wardrobe contest. I tend to be more productive when I feel as if I've a deadline.

New Look 6898

Happy Spring. I hope it's warm where you are. Here? Not so much.
Every spring I am reminded of how much wind we have.
In fact it was cold and windy the entire weekend.

I did manage to get some productive sewing time in. This skirt is a New Look pattern. Overall I am happy with the results. The front pleats are going to take a little getting used to. I generally make skirts with a flat front.

Colette Patterns Biegnet skirt

I'm posting the Biegnet skirt even though it's not quite finished. When I tried to make the buttonholes my machine was skipping stitches.

A friend of mine owns a Janome sewing machine. She is impressed by the buttonhole maker. I'll try it on this skirt.

:: my informal pattern review::

::I liked this pattern. The instructions are in a sweet little illustrated booklet. Sarai takes you through the construction step by step. Don't shy away even if you are a beginner.
::The Colette patterns are sized using a different method than the fabulous four. I believe that it is closer to what you find when you shop RTW.

::The skirt is lined, I flipped it inside out to show you the way the facing is attached to the lining. clever

::I used a stretch cotton poplin from my stash. The lining is also cotton with a hint of lycra.
::I haven't yet decided if I will make the belt carriers. I like the idea of wearing different size belts with this skirt. I put the belt on for the photo, so that the high waist would be more apparent.
::Overall a really cute skirt. A little trendy with the high waist, but classic enough to become a wardrobe staple.
::Plus it has pockets in the side seams...

I've had this Colette pattern for a year. When Sarai first came out with her pattern line I was intrigued. I cannot believe it took me so long to get back around to this. Look how cute. This is what I found when I opened the package. Such attention to detail. The instructions come in a booklet with a pocket in the back for storing the pattern pieces. I hope to finish this skirt in the next couple of days. I'll do a complete pattern review then.

Black eyelet dress

This is a reproduction of a much loved (threadbare) vintage dress. I took the dress apart to use it as a pattern. I wasn't able to completely replicate the skirt. The original was much fuller than the skirt I ended up with here. For the skirt I used the remaining fabric and just applied it dirndl style using small pleats instead of gathers. Although not petticoat worthy, I like it.

I lightened the last photos up a little to show off the fabric. It's a vintage cotton eyelet that I've been saving for a special project. Since I knew the dress would fit I wasn't afraid to cut into the fabric. I have huge issues cutting into vintage fabric that I really like. I worry that once the fabric is gone it's gone forever. I'm turning into a hoarder. I'm working on that.

Happy Valentines Day

Happy Valentines Day. What's that you say? I'm not quite making it out. I thought I heard; "Today's not Valentines Day." Really? Over? I completely missed the date?

It reminds me a little of my first date with my husband. Somehow the subject of punctuality came up. I was referring to the ten minute window - as if you've no idea what I'm referring to, I do not make the rules people. When it became clear that he had forgotten about this unsaid rule, I had to refresh his memory. The amount of time that you can be late before you are technically late. Fifteen minutes late is just bad form, but up to ten minutes is acceptable, after all life happens... Dead silence.
So he informed me that he had no idea what I was talking about. In fact he went so far as to suggest that being late is just that, late. Imagine.
Knowing him as I do now, I'm a little surprised that there was a second date.

Oh, the apron? I thought it would be appropriate for the occasion. Or rather would have been on Valentines Day.

Yellow floral circle skirt

I want this skirt. I loved it when I first saw it on the Sartorialist blog.
I looked hard for several weeks for the fabric to make a skirt like this. I finally ordered fabric that wasn't quite what I wanted, but I hoped it was close enough. Nope.

Now I am seriously going to be haunted. I've seen it again. I tried to go back and find the link. I've lost it. Please someone, tell me you know where to get fabric like this.
It would also be nice to identify the model. I love her look in both of these photos.

BurdaStyle jenny skirt

....or the day after tomorrow, or the day after that. Darn you bloggers that make this look so easy. I find I never have everything I need. I don't have a photo, I don't have the words, I don't make the time, etc.

So as promised this is the jenny skirt. I am giving this skirt a firm two thumbs up. This pattern fit as is. I am making it again. This time I am going to shorten the waistband. I am not sure if this high waisted style is going to suit me long term. Again, burda I'm not lovin' the lack of a back vent. The pattern instructions have you turn in the seam allowance to finish the back slit.
I made this out of some mystery thrift-ed fabric. Which I love, by the way. It has some lycra content (so the skirt has some give) but still has a nice hand. The skirt pattern can be found here if you are interested.

As soon as I have decent light I'll get a photo of the entire outfit. In the dark the blouse looks like a yellow blob.

This is the view outside my studio window. We officially called this a snow day. The snow day turned into a dance night. My four year old sure knows how to shake it. Good times.

I was hoping to get a photo of this high waist-ed pencil skirt. It's a Burda Style pattern, which became part of my solution to finish the yellow floral silk dress. It didn't happen, it's way to dark in here. Tomorrow...

Zipper debate

I was prompted to share my thoughts regarding zippers when I read this post. Gertie addresses the invisible zipper issue.

Here's my official position. When I put a zipper in the side seam, I reach for an invisible zip. As hard as I try I cannot keep everything as flat as I'd like with any other method of insertion. I have tried. Believe me I've tried, because I hate invisible zippers. I love them in concept, but hate the plastic teeth and find them very poorly made. I'd choose a vintage zipper over new every time. Besides they come in such yummy colors. How about poppy, tango, mignonette, temple gold, moss green, frosty blue, devil red, mulberry, toast....

Frump to Fab

I pulled this dress out of my pile of unfinished projects. Yes, I have a pile of projects waiting to be finished. I'm not proud. This dress has been in the project queue (sounds more legitimate) for over a year. It is the result of a not so successful draping project that I dabbled in.
As it hung on the dress form the skirt continued to get longer. I suppose that I could have called it asymmetrical and wore it anyway, but I'm not a huge fan. I love the fabric to much to give up and call it a wader.

Flash forward one year. I have an event on Saturday that this dress (finished and fabulous) will be perfect for. Where is the sewing world version of underdog? You know, the super hero that shouts out, "HERE I COME TO SAVE THE DAY." Can I pull it off?
That then becomes the question. Keep your fingers crossed. I don't have much time, but I do have a plan. dun dun dun

JJ BurdaStyle

Here's my version of the BurdaStyle JJ blouse.
It still needs a hem, but I had to get the photo while I still had some light.
I did change it up a little on the front. The print that I chose was busy, so I eliminated the front ruffles; and streamlined it a bit.

Both the front and back have a side panel. The end result is a fairly fitted silhouette.

The front placket was up-cycled from another shirt.

My sewing machine has been in Tennessee since November 25. The Pfaff service department completely went through the machine for a cleaning, and to fix a timing issue. This is the machine that I use every day. I have been in total withdrawal. When I'm not pouting, I'm using this down time for yarn-y projects.

I found this pattern on etsy. The designer is while they play. She also offers the pattern for the longer length, which she calls the Audrey fingerless glove. When I went over to get the link, I noticed that she's put new patterns on. She offers both crochet and knit patterns. If you want to cut to the chase, I see she's got several items already made up. I have posted a pattern review for both pairs on ravelry.

Simplicity 2588

This dress was made using a project runway pattern. I like the fact that with these patterns you're offered additional design details. I'm sure you've seen them - but in case you haven't- the patterns offer a couple of sleeve, skirt, waistband, etc. variations, so that you have design freedom, following the theme of becoming your own designer - project runway style.

The fabric that I used is from my stash. I did a burn test to determine the fabric type and I still have no idea. The fabric drapes nice and has a medium hand. There is a slight nap to it. During the burn test it smells of burning hair. The burned edge is not melted like you would see if it was synthetic, yet it did draw up. Before I did this test I actually washed the fabric and ran it through a hot dryer. Now I am wondering if it could be a wool blend?

If it's wool it miraculously survived the very scientific throw it in the washer/ hot dryer and see what happens test.

Jingle Bells

I hope you had a safe and festive holiday.

I wanted to share images of the skirt I made specifically for the occasion.
My sister wondered if I made this skirt out of a tablecloth. I explained that I had added the trim. She asked me, "Okaaay... why?"

I am surprised that after knowing me her whole life, she would have had to ask me that question.
For without the pom-pon trim ( setting them to motion with my legs) how else would I have been able to accompany myself in a very rowdy rendition of jingle bells, all day long?

Many years from now when I am gone, what special memories of me would my children have had to share? When reminiscing this particular Christmas I'm sure it all will be followed by, "I can't believe she did that, she was so... (whispered) sober."

Deco Vibe Flippy Skirt

So, this is my official pattern review of the hot pattern Deco Vibe Flippy Skirt. I love the cut of this skirt. It is very slimming from the front. I would have preferred real pockets instead of the faux pocket that is offered in the pattern. I need real working pockets people. Need, need, need them. If you like a real working pocket like I do, I think it wouldn't be a huge deal to modify this one.

View from the front, so you can see for yourself what I'm talking about. I don't know how to describe it, it just drapes nicely.

I KNOW!! Or should I say; now I know. I was completely ready to go out in public! On the way out the door, D wondered if I meant to outline my bottom. He seriously asked me that. "Did you mean to outline your bottom?" What are you asking, who in their right mind would do that? So I got out the hand mirror - and backed up to the full length mirror to get a good look at my rear (something I try never to do) , and sure enough, bigger than Dallas I had outlined my butt. Before you ask me "WHAT WERE YOU THINKING?" Let me just state for the record I made this skirt on a whim one evening after a big day. I may have been a little tired. When I held the dark brown rick-rack up to the skirt and it popped, I'm sure I was thinking, wow, contrast trim, this will really pop. I specifically do not remember thinking, contrast trim, now this will really accentuate my butt.

So my final thoughts on this subject are... I recommend this pattern, it has an unusual cut. The instructions are a little sketchy and like all hot patterns assumes that you have general sewing knowledge. Hot patterns do not offer pictures with the instructions if you are a visual seamstress. As you can see from the line drawing the curve on the back is actually higher than it is drawn. I do not recommend using a contrasting trim. Unless of course having a smiley posterior is your thing, then contrast away.

This is the outfit I would have been wearing.
So funny, my sister suggested that I flip the skirt around, and that might just be the solution. The trim is serged in and short of cutting it off, it is in to stay.

Corduroy skirt and wool leg warmers

Another lesson in never say never. As in; "I would never wear leg warmers." Enter leg warmers in yummy wool tweed. Who, I ask you could resist? Don't judge... it's cold in Colorado. I used them as a second pair of socks and tucked them into my boots. Yea, leg warmers!!

The skirt is a self drafted simple a-line. I had a remnant of vintage curtain fabric, that I fussy cut and appliqued on. I left the edges raw for that faintly distressed look.

I took the time to do a lot of stitching detail. It doesn't really show unless you look real close. (Click on the photo)

I'm hanging out in the studio today, working on a fun Christmas gift - and yes, I'm wearing the legwarmers.

Crafting Japanese

I have a huge fondness for Japanese Craft Books. I have collected a few, and have actually used them to make several items, all sewn.
I stumbled upon some crochet books - written of course- in Japanese. Just for one little second lets ignore the fact that I'm a fairly inexperienced crocheter, not to mention I cannot read a word of Japanese, not one word.

How could I resist? The cute factor is just to great.

So... I'm boldly forging ahead. The crochet patterns are all on schematic charts. Because this method is international, there are several sites online that offer information on how to follow this method of crochet. The information that I found even suggested that the system was invented by the Japanese in the 1960's. For many years it was referred to as the JIS (Japanese International Symbol) system.
The premise being, that if there is only one set of symbols - internationally recognized- language would not matter, as you would only need to know the symbols to "read" the pattern.

Excellent.
Now, I just need to know a few key phrases to get my needle size and yarn type/weight.

Fat Bottomed Bag

I found this vintage enamel pin and put it on my crochet bag. It occurred to me that I've never posted the fat bottomed bag finished. The project was from some time back.

I added my own lining, the pattern doesn't call for one. I just flattened the bag (before I added the band that gathers it all up) as much as I could. This became my lining pattern. I gathered the lining onto a velvet ribbon to hide the edge, and hand sewed it into place.

Some of the paint has chipped off, but I think it makes the pin even more charming.
I love the bag, but my kids say it looks like an old grandma bag. I'm off to run errands, rockin' the old grandma look.

Dear Daryl,

In downtown Ridgeway there is a thrift store. Mom and I were passing by on our way to Grand Junction. I had her stop, just for a minute.

We went our separate ways, mom over to the kitchen stuff, me elbow deep in the fabric bin. This particular bin had several shelves, and there was already someone looking things over. Of course I'm hoping she hasn't already found the vintage fabric. I finally come up for air and notice my surroundings, checking out my competition for the vintage fabric, and it's none other than Daryl Hannah. yeah.

Trying my best to appear nonchalant and unaffected - only knocking a couple of things over on the way - I make my way back to mom in the kitchen section. So the following is the story as I remember it. Mom, feel free to add anything (or defend yourself) , I'm happy to edit.

"Mom, Daryl Hannah is in the store. She's over in the fabric section shopping." Mom very unruffled and matter of fact, hands me a random piece of handwork (see photo) that she's already found lying somewhere in the store and says, "Take this over and have her sign it." Now, I'm not going to bore you with the details/dialog of the argument that ensued. Suffice it to say that she won, she always does. Dragging my feet I go back over to ask Daryl for her autograph, something I would never have imagined doing, not in a million years.

"Excuse me Daryl, do you see that women over there in the kitchen section? That's my mother. She's a quilter. She sent me over with this fabric, hoping that you would autograph it for her. She plans on making a quilt around it. You know, with the dog image in the center the other blocks radiating out from that, blah, blah, blahbiddy, blah." Oh the agony. I'm sure she was wondering, will this never end. Then she signed it, she really signed it. I'm sure that it had something to do with shutting me up.

Back to mom in the kitchen section. She witnessed the entire interaction. She then hands me another piece of fabric. She is quite sure that once I've had time to think about it, I'm going to want an autograph of my own. "Don't even think about it, you can't have mine," she says. "Mom, why didn't you have me take them both over in the first place?" Now she's laughing, "I didn't think it was Daryl Hannah. I've been over here just crackin' up, thinking that you were asking a complete stranger for Daryl Hannahs autograph."

So you might be thinking that this is the punchline. Nope, not even close.

I went back over and asked for another autograph!!

Swirls Cap

I found this newsboy cap pattern - offered by Sophia Kessinger on ravelry. It was just screamin' to be made up. What a fun project. I now own two of these. The wool is vintage, and is a denim color with a cool under tone of brown.

The flower accessory is also offered in the pattern. I'm not wild about it on the cap. I'll probably put a pin on the back and wear it on a jacket. Not at the same time.
The fabric that I used as my backdrop in this photo is the lining for the handbag I'm working on.

Petticoats

I found myself in dire need of a petticoat. I knew I did not want to make one. I tried to order said undergarment from anthropologie. I was even willing to use a "get out of jail free" card from my wardrobe refashion challenge. When I checked online the yellow crinoline that I wanted was back-ordered. So this (not so) little project came about not out of desire, but necessity. About halfway I actually thought of an easier way to do this. Now I have to make another to test that idea. Just for the record this one was put together with a double row of basting thread gathering method. Yuck. I have so many rows because I wanted large volume. This would be overkill for everyday wear. I think for day-wear you could get by with two rows of ruffles.

The little mini me belongs to my daughter. When she saw mine she really wanted one. The design is much simpler. I found a vintage peignoir and cut off the bottom and gathered it onto a slip I found at the thrift. I just used the lace at the bottom as the hem. Petticoats are made from the bottom up. voila.
Madi is wearing hers as a skirt. In fact I had to rip it off her body to take this photo. She has had it on for two days straight. I would call that a wardrobe refashion success.

fyi: The crinoline at anthropologie seems a little short. I think the best length is one or two inches shorter than your skirt. The yellow crinoline is only 19" in length. I do really like the color.

Generally the way they work is - you reveal things about yourself that you are assuming someone will find remotely interesting. Now, I actually enjoy reading these little tags, they are like tiny little glimpses of you. So here goes, be gentle.

Seven random things you may or may not want to know about me:

1. I love corny musicals. I know, I'm sorry, I didn't say this was going to be pretty. Grease 2 is still one of my secret all time favorite movies. If you haven't seen it I recommend donning a disguise and rushing right out to you local movie rental (preferably on a weekend when your family is not at home, or trust me you'll never hear the end of it) and picking this movie up. In my defense, in high school I was in Jazz Singers. I would liken this to glee. Although none of my classmates were near as funny. Good times. Good times.
2. Harold and the Purple Crayon was one of my favorite books as a child.
3. I make up (bad) rap songs and threaten to sing them in front of my children' s friends as a way to control their behavior. It works.
4. I drink waaay to much coffee.
5. I've been married more than once. gasp. Got it right this time.
6. I took tags off of brand name clothing when I was in high school, and added them to garments that I had created. I had a pair of knock off Levis that I copied (down to the pockets) and added a tag from a pair that didn't fit that I found at the thrift. Please don't tell.
7. I am currently into crochet that looks as if it came from my granny. Pillows, throws, the cute little banner thingys that I keep seeing everywhere.

The second part of this tag is to nominate seven blogs that I admire and challenge them to play along. As I am not sure who has done this one, and I can't narrow my favorites down to just seven, I'll respectfully pass on the second portion of the challenge. The answer of course - is so that I can wear my new crinoline under. What was the question? Oh; has it really been so long since my last post? Quick check, oops. If you had any thoughts about it at all, I'm sure you wondered if I've taken a hiatus.

I actually envisioned a photo shoot in the leaves, with the cottonwoods turning colors and radiant in the background. We had a snow storm and the leaves are brown and on the ground now.

I am a little uncertain about the neckline. The line drawing does not fully show the extent of the scoop on the bodice. Very scoopy. Seriously scoopy. Undergarments are going to be an issue here. The bodice is completely lined and I suppose you could just skip it (undergarments that is) if you were inclined. I am more inclined to manage with a supporting cast, if you get my drift. So.. not to sure what to do about that. No, I did not make a muslin first, you silly.

A fabulous slim cut dress, with a gathered neckline and short raglan sleeves.

I couldn't resist this issue when I saw these photos. Any anthro lovin' girl could have found herself in the same predicament.

Seriously, we have delicate chiffon meeting rustic tweed.

Another version of the pencil skirt, this time with a raised waist and tiny waist pleats. sigh...

A trench coat with a capelet and gentle hem flounce. According to the pattern book it lends this trench a feminine, fanciful flair. You had me at the flounce.

Last fall I learned to crochet. My first project was a granny square pillow. The original plan was to add crochet detail to the knitted projects I planned on completing. Now it is fall again, and I've yet to complete one knitted project.
I did discover that I really like to crochet.
I expressed at one point how it is just too bad I can't make shoes - as the shoes I covet are usually way out of my budget.
That's right, now I make shoes. I tried two different versions. The black version has hemp on the bottom and can be worn to the mailbox. The yellow pair has wool on the bottom and I consider it more of a slipper.
I know, hippie shoes.

Bound Buttonholes

Armed with only my Singer Sewing book copyright 1949 and high hopes I re-visited bound buttonholes. I love this detail when I find it on vintage clothing. I've done this before a couple of times. It is not like riding a bicycle - you know, some things come back to you naturally. Some things you just forget.

So if it's looking a little shabby it might have something to do with the three times I picked it out before I was happy (enough) with the results. Oh go ahead, I know you want to - click on it to enlarge so that you can see the needle marks that are still in there. ;)

The huge pencil skirt pattern review

The first pencil skirt pattern I tried was the hot patterns version. Let me just say for the record I really, really, wanted this to be the one. Not only that I love the idea of supporting these indie pattern companies, but Trudy and Jeremy have really gone the distance to make their patterns user friendly. If you haven't found them on You Tube you are missing out on some pretty creative stuff. I have had good luck with the hot patterns I've used. This one not so much. The pattern has some really great details, I just couldn't get the fit right. I found the shape very bulbous at the hip line. Then when I adjusted for that, I could never get the front darts quite right. I liked the curved waistband, the hem (deep bias cut facing) and the back kick pleat.

Skirt number two: New Look pattern 6758
I cut this out in my usual size. It's big. Never assume. You know the saying. So I have to re-size after it's almost done. Is this really going to happen? Maybe yes, maybe no.
Funny, after I made this, and while I was looking up the info, I found this post. My sentiments exactly.

So finally, in this case the third time being the charm, I've got it. This skirt is from a burda pattern. I first saw it made up here. I will make a this one again. I am going to borrow the elements I liked from the hot patterns skirt and make a few changes. The back slit is just the seam finished, and I don't think it will hold up well and I don't like the look. I'll add the vent. I'm also going to add the bias fabric hem.
So... as promised there you have it, maybe this will help someone looking for a go to pencil skirt pattern.

All of these images are J.Crew. I am enjoying the use of unusual fabric. It reminds me of vintage sofas - in a good way. I have some of this unusual fabric in my stash. So I was on a quest for the perfect pencil skirt pattern. After several attempts I am happy to report I think I've found it!! So, in my next post I'll share the skirts that didn't make the cut, and then the one that did.

Another example of freezer paper stencil. Any simple image can become fabric art. The bird image is just clip art. There are tutorials all over if you've not tried this yet.

Mad for Plaid...More Print and Pattern

This plaid dress came from a junk shop. I found it in less than wearable condition. There were many issues. A lot of the seams had failed and had to be sewn up. I also re-sized it and took the hemline up.

I don't mind the issues when I am lucky enough to find vintage. A little mending/darning just gives it character. I added a little character with this fix of the hole in the skirt.

I finally put some print and pattern photos into flickr. These were taken at Stone Free Farm. If you want to see more you can also access my account using the button in the sidebar. The handbag is one that I thought I'd sold. Now it will make it's way back into the shop. The dress is vintage.

The only thing the dress is lacking, is this yellow crinoline from anthropologie. I know that I could make it. In fact I should. Instead I am using my get out of jail card from the wardrobe refashion challenge and buying it new. gasp...
Somehow I cannot wrap my brain around gathering all that tulle to save $38.00.
I will post more from the photo shoot. Right now there is a mellow yellow crinoline with my name on it.

Recession Garden

A little before and after of the other big project that I've been working on.

Growing up we always had a garden.
I did not enjoy the process. It was always hot, and it seemed that the work was never ending. I did enjoy picking and eating the veggies that were ready, usually right there in the garden.

I have enjoyed the garden this summer. I am amazed that this little (actually not so little) garden has done so well. It helped that we started with really good soil. It seems that I retained some of the skills that I acquired while part of Mom's crew.

This is part of my crew. They do not really enjoy the process either. In fact, they prefer to observe from a distance, while wearing their pajamas.

As the nights get cooler, I find myself thinking about winter fabric, vintage velvet, wool pencil skirts, trousers, vests, and tights.

I am going to risk over using the el word. I love... this shirt pattern. I knew when it was first released that I would have to work it up. Yup, no changes, just exactly as it is featured on the pattern cover. The fabric that I used was thrifted. It is vintage 1989 Lorber Industries of California 6698 "Chambrey Stripe". I made this as part of the print and pattern collection that I've been working on.

Beet Salad

Check out these beets. They are not from my garden, and although I am now harvesting my own beets, I am still choosing to post this photo. Why? because my beets aren't as pretty. There you have it- I'm not proud, I'm just telling it like it is. To give credit where credit is due, the beets are from Stone Free Farm.

The beets found their way into this salad. Isn't it pretty? So... I had to take its picture. In the process I am interrupted by Hanna.
Hanna: What are you doing?
Mom: Taking a picture of this salad.
Hanna: Seriously? Why?
Mom: Because it is so pretty.
Hanna: Jaron... Mom is taking a picture of her salad.
Jaron: Why?
Mom: Because it is so pretty?
Jaron: Are you putting that on your blog?
Mom: Maybe?
Jaron: Who does that???

When the Dad got home he was barely through the door before he was informed that Mom took a picture of her salad and then posted it on the Internet. A plenty lengthy debate then ensued regarding the posting of your dinner and who really wants to read about it. Is there a possibility that mom's loosing it? Of course I'm over here defending myself. Explaining that lots of people post their dinner on the net. (Hey, I know who you are, I read your blog.) What I didn't realize of course, is that you are taking the pictures of your food,
after the children have gone to bed.

Print and Pattern

I love to look at fashion storyboards- fashion storyboard: a summary of your collection's inspiration and theme- I also like to create them. It seems to help keep me focused. This particular storyboard was taken when some of the items were works in progress, but you get the general idea.
The market tote ends up looking like a similar version of this one. The project is a collaboration with blossomshop/stonefreefarm. Rosie designed and printed the logo. The materials in the bag are recycled. The retro prints that we are using on the back are vintage drapes/drapery fabric.

Toward the end of this month we plan to have a photo shoot at the farm. I hope to share those photos with you soon. Click on the photo if you want a close-up view of the fabulous fabric. Or find more pics here.

I've had this dress finished for awhile, but I'm slow getting the photos.
I used several different patterns to get the look that I wanted. The bodice top from one, skirt from another, and self drafted pockets.

I wanted you to see a close-up, as the fabric is really great. I am unsure of the era. The stylized flowers tend to suggest fifties. The width was also only 35". I am tempted to hem it up just a titch. It just feels a little long. Then again, sometimes it is just time to be done.
What do you think?

Chicks in a Limo

We spent the fourth cruising around in this limo. I am not however one of the "chicks" that this post is referring to.

Yes, these are the chicks.

This is my brother.
There were signs while we were growing up that he would be an eccentric. We were too young to understand or appreciate what would come. We missed some of those early warnings. I'm sure that most mothers do not get a call from the elementary school, asking that she make sure her son not bring any more mice pelts to school to sell to his classmates. There were other signs, but that's another very long post, on another day when you've got a huge chunk of time.
Disclaimer: I do not sanction the pelting/selling of mice, nor does does my long suffering mother.

Anyway... the crate on top of the limo is full of chicks. I know!!

So...Tony will bring your chicks to you in the limo.
Mom, did you ever think for one second that your son would turn out to be an eccentric chicken farmer? You probably expected something of the sort.

We had so much fun at The Chicken Ranch.

Fire up the limo Tone, you're having way too much fun. Our chicken pen is almost ready. We need some chickens of our own.

I found this pattern to be straight forward. It's an easy sew. The only modification - if you can call it that - is the braid trim I added at the midriff.

Freezer Paper Stencil

I could just hug the crafter (crafters) that came up with the brilliant idea to use freezer paper as stencil tool. It doesn't move. It stays where you want, for as long as you want.

Just in case you've never tried freezer paper stenciling here is a great tutorial. Craftster also has some great info on this technique.

singleton buttons

Diane Gilleland has come up with a very nice tutorial for singleton buttons. Sometimes I find tiny bits of vintage fabric, and this would be such a great way to preserve them.

I'm soooooo... behind in posting the projects I've completed, I hope to remedy that asap. The time I would have taken to post, has been consumed in the garden. What started out as "Lets plant a few tomatoes", has turned into "We've got the space, water, etc. lets go for it." Okay. So here I go.

Minnie's Dresses

I purchased the vintage dresses from Minnie. She kept them because she was going to wear them when she lost her post pregnancy weight. So they hung in her closet all these years. By the way her waist is a whopping 27" now (she's 83). So I collected her story and bought her dresses. I am not going to keep them, my waist was never 24" (even pre-pregnancy). Cotton batiste blouse

Gorgeous antique inspired blouses by Lyell. I love, love this clothing line by Emma Fletcher. Some of these images come from this season, and some are from seasons past. It doesn't really matter (unless you are looking to purchase one) because all of the designs are timeless.

So... I am looking to make a Lyell inspired blouse. I already have the lace, which was a gift from a friend. I need to find cotton batiste. Batiste is lightweight, semi-sheer, and delicate. I do not know where to look for this kind of fabric.
Ideas?
